The hadith of the three knots
By Zakariya Telitel, independent developer of Bedless Fajr · Updated
Every night, three knots. Every morning, a choice about whether they open. This hadith is often quoted about Fajr, and it is more practical than it sounds.
The text
Narrated by Abu Hurayra. Sahih al-Bukhari 1142; also Sahih Muslim 776.
On each knot, in the English translation on sunnah.com, Shaytan says: “The night is long, so stay asleep.” Read the full hadith and its translation on sunnah.com.
What the three knots are
| Knot | What undoes it |
|---|---|
| First | Remembering Allah on waking (dhikr, the waking dua) |
| Second | Wudu: water, standing at the sink |
| Third | The prayer itself |
The order is the order of a morning: a thought, then water, then prayer. Each step is small and each one makes the next easier. The hadith does not say the knots are undone by wanting to get up. It says they are undone by doing three specific things. Two of the three need you on your feet: wudu and prayer.
Why it matches what sleep science measures
The hadith describes a heaviness that argues with you (“the night is long”) and disappears once you act. Sleep research describes sleep inertia: a measured drop in mental performance in the first minutes after waking, worst in the first three (Wertz et al., JAMA, 2006; University of Colorado summary). Without major sleep deprivation, it rarely lasts more than 30 minutes (Tassi & Muzet, Sleep Medicine Reviews, 2000). The heaviness and the inertia have the same shape: both are strongest in the first minutes, while you are still in bed.
What to do with it tonight
- Before sleeping, read Ayat al-Kursi (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311) and the last two verses of al-Baqarah (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009): Sunnah protections for the night.
- On waking, say the waking dua before anything else. That is the first knot.
- Put the sink between you and the bed. If your alarm won't stop until you are standing somewhere else (your prayer mat, your bathroom), you're already standing; wudu is a few steps away.
- Pray immediately. The third knot opens, and in the hadith's words you start the morning energetic and in good spirits.
The hadith ends with the two outcomes and nothing in between. There is no “woke up, snoozed, felt fine”. How to set up a morning where the knots open.

What the app checks: an object in a photo (here, an unrolled prayer mat). It never checks your wudu or your prayer.
Questions
Is the three knots hadith authentic?
Yes. It is in Sahih al-Bukhari (1142) and Sahih Muslim (776), narrated by Abu Hurayra. A hadith reported in both (muttafaq ʿalayh, “agreed upon”) has the highest grade of authenticity in Sunni scholarship.
What undoes the three knots?
Remembering Allah on waking undoes the first, wudu the second, and prayer the third. The hadith names actions, not intentions.
Does the hadith apply to naps or only to night sleep?
The wording is about the night's sleep (“The night is long, so stay asleep.”). In Fath al-Bari, his commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari (Kitab al-Tahajjud), Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani says its apparent meaning is night sleep, and adds that something similar may happen in a daytime nap (Arabic text on Islamweb; an English explanation of the hadith on HadeethEnc).
What is the waking dua?
«Alhamdulillahi alladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur»: Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return (Bukhari 6312).
An alarm that gets you on your feet
Bedless Fajr won't stop until a photo proves you're up: of your sink, your prayer mat (unrolled), a glass of water, or your toothbrush or siwak, picked at random each morning. It checks an object in a photo, never your wudu or your prayer. Every way the alarm can stop.
